The name was first coined by Forbes was at the time of William the Lion (r. 1165-1214). Fergus Forbes appears in a charter issued by Alexander Earl of Buchan in 1236. The name originates from land in Aberdeenshire. In 1303 in the War of Independence, Alexander Forbes was killed while defending Urquhart Castle against Edward I and his son, who was also killed, in his death at the Battle at the Battle of Duplin (1332). His grandson was given the title Baron Forbes. The Color of Forbes Ancient Tartan includes Blue , Green, Black and White.
