There appear to be two MacAulay families. One was established around the 13th century in Ardencaple and the other on the Island of Lewis. They were the Ardencaple MacAulay's were part of Clan Alpine and, in 1591, were allied with those of the MacGregor clan as septs. Their lands were transferred in 1787 to the Duke of Argyll in 1787. In 1787, the Macaulays of Lewis were descendants of those of the MacLeods from Lewis who claim to descend to Aula also known as "Olave The Black" who in the 13th century was King of Man and the Isles. MacAulay's was a town on the Highland mainland that is part of Clan MacKenzie. MacAulay Ancient Tartan features are the background Red for the College's youth-centric role contrasted with its corporate colors of green and white lines.
