Tips to Take Care of Your Kilts

by Nisha Kathiriya 22 Aug 2022

Since your kilt is an investment, you want to maintain it looking awesome for as long as possible. Your kilt may last a lifetime if properly cared for (or even two). How should you look after your kilt? Imperial Highland Supplies has the capacity to keep hundreds of kilts at once, so it's fair to say we're specialists in the field. Here are our top recommendations.

How to Store Your Kilt?

Always air your kilt well before storing it. It is better to do this outside on a sunny day. If that isn't a possibility, hang your kilt in the shower room (but not IN the shower) to absorb the steam. Before storing your kilt, allow it to dry completely in a warm, airy location.

We suggest high-quality hangers that secure your kilt along the full top if keeping it for an extended period of time. Steel Kilt Hanger are ideal for short-term storage. Always clip the front and rear of your kilt together to prevent drooping.

Finally, wool loves to breathe, so make room in your closet for your custom-made kilt. or further security, choose a Kilt Carrier and Roll Set.

How to Clean Your Kilt?

Spills occur. If you spill anything on your kilt, clean the stain immediately with a clean, moist, lint-free towel. If it doesn't work, your alternatives are limited by the kind of kilt you own. Fortunately, our kilts are machine washable. Wash at 30° with a liquid product (this saves you money and energy). To minimize creases, use a brief spin on the synthetic cycle. To avoid damage from the buckle, secure your straps before placing your kilt in the washing machine.

When completed, hang your kilt to dry on a kilt hanger to avoid ironing.

How to Maintain Custom Made Kilts?

Because wool is inherently resistant to dirt, your custom-made kilt needs little maintenance. If you can't clean up a spill by wiping, it's advisable to hire a professional cleaner. Choose a cleaner who knows what they're doing. You may also softly brush your custom kilt downwards with a soft clothes brush to remove lint and dust.

How to Iron Your Kilts?

A kilt practically never has to be ironed. Any mild wrinkles should disappear within a few days, particularly if hung in a hot environment. Here's what you should do if your kilt needs ironing. On the opposite side of the cloth, use a cold iron. Make sure the pleats are aligned and don't allow them slip off the ironing board. Consider asking the assistance of a friend to hold up your creases. Set your iron to steam and iron the kilt's apron with the underside facing you on the ironing board. To preserve the fabric, drape it with an ironing cloth and softly press the iron on the cloth. Instead of ironing back and forth, just put the iron on the cloth, raise, and repeat with the next piece.

Never iron wool on the right side since it will create glossy markings.

The creases on your bespoke kilt seldom need to be pressed. To steam your pleats, we suggest waiting until your kilt has been properly cleaned.

Transporting with a Kilt

If you're temporarily transporting your kilt by automobile, hang it from the suit hook in a protective container. Consider rolling your kilt when traveling long distances to reduce space and the need for ironing.
