The surname Fletcher derives from the Gaelic meaning 'arrow maker' and was a trade name found across Scotland. Fletchers were associated with clans who employed them, such as the Campbells and Stewarts in Argyll and the MacGregor in Perthshire. Henry Fletcher was recorded as Burgess of Forfar in 1374. The Fletchers of Saltoun and Innerpeffer are alleged to be direct descendants of Sir Bernard Fletcher of York. In the 16th century, a family of Fletchers owned Achallader in Glen Tulla, but later ceded their lands to the Campbells of Glenorchy. Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun (1653-1716) opposed the Act of Union, while Archibald Fletcher, 9th Chief, supported the 1715 Uprising, and Fletchers fought on both sides during the 1745. Following the Jacobite defeat at Culloden, many Fletcher clansmen were cleared by the Campbells of Breadalbane from Glenorchy, and subsequently emigrated. The Fletcher Chiefship became dormant in 1911 with the death of the 14th Chief in New York. The Clan's patronymic was Mac-an-leistear, which was anglicized as Fletcher in the 18th century. The Latin motto, "Recta Pete" means "Seek what is right". The Clan badge is a left arm embowed. The Fletcher tartan features a red overstripe, with black tramlines that are thinner and closer together in the Clans Originaux sample. The Fletcher Tartan is a striking combination of green, blue, black, and red. The design features thick, prominent lines of green and blue, intersecting with thinner, dark lines of black, creating an intricate criss-cross pattern. The bright red stripes that run throughout the tartan provide a bold contrast against the darker shades of the background. This tartan is often associated with the Fletcher clan, who were prominent landowners in the Scottish Highlands.
