Historical Context

Somerled from the Isles was the creator of Clan Donald, exiling his fellow Norsemen out of the Western Isles in the 12th century. In 1164, he was executed while fighting King Malcolm IV. John, his brother Angus Og, supported Robert the Bruce and took the title of "Lord of Isles" in 1354. The 2nd Lord claimed the Earldom of Ross and defended his claims at Harlow in 1411. His son was made the Earl of Ross, with official recognition in 1430. The Lord of the Isles, who died in 1478, became a Peer that same year, though he was in conflict with the King, leading to the title being attached to the crown in 1494.
