The MacDonald of Staffa Tartan has deep historical roots tied to Clan Donald, established by Somerled in the 12th century. Somerled, who exiled fellow Norsemen from the Western Isles, met his end in 1164 while resisting King Malcolm IV. Clan Donald has since been influential in Scottish history, with notable figures such as Angus Og, who supported Robert the Bruce and became the "Lord of Isles" in 1354. The clan's legacy continued with the 2nd Lord, who fought for the Earldom of Ross in 1411 and saw the title recognized in 1430. Though the Lord of the Isles died in conflict with the crown, the title was reclaimed in 1494, solidifying the clan's prominence in Scottish history.
