The Setons are a family that originated from Normans and played a significant role in Scotland's political life from the 12th to the early 18th centuries. Philip de Setoune, who took his name from the Lothian lands of Seton, Winton, and Winchburgh, was granted a charter during the reign of William the Lion to confirm his possession of these lands. Seton means "homestead by the sea”. Sir Alexander Seton, who was not always a consistent supporter of Scottish independence, provided crucial intelligence to King Robert I just before the Battle of Stirling and Bannockburn. Over time, he became one of the trusted royal councillors and was among the signatories of the Declaration of Arbroath, a famous letter to the Papacy that declared Scotland's independence. After the deaths of his two sons in opposing Edward Balliol's forces, Seton's daughter Margaret inherited the estates, and her descendants went on to become the Lords Seton.
