Historical Significance
The Cockburn Ancient Tartan is steeped in the rich history of the Cockburn family, an armigerous clan from the Lowlands of Scotland. Although the exact origin of the name is uncertain, it is likely linked to the land of Cukooburn in Roxburghshire. The name first appeared in historical records with Peter de Cokburne between 1190 and 1220. The clan rose to prominence, with Sir Alexander de Cockburn marrying into the Vipont family and acquiring the Barony of Langton in Berwickshire. Notable figures include William Cockburn of Henderland, who faced execution under James V in 1530. The clan's motto, "Accendit cantu" (He Rouses Us with Song), and their crest, featuring a crowing cock, reflect their proud heritage and resilience. Though currently without a chief, their tartan remains an emblem of their enduring legacy.
Color Scheme & Pattern
The Cockburn Ancient Tartan is characterized by its vibrant color scheme, showcasing a striking combination of blue, green, red, yellow, black, and white. The dominant blue and green represent the natural beauty of Scotland's landscape and the clan's deep connection to their homeland. The red symbolizes the passion and strength of the Cockburn clan, while yellow and white signify loyalty and purity. Black elements highlight the darker aspects of the clan's history, specifically the execution of William Cockburn of Henderland. The tartan's bold pattern features thick lines that create a memorable and impactful design, crafted from 100% acrylic wool, ensuring durability and comfort.
