Historical Significance
The Dundas Tartan is steeped in rich Scottish history, tracing its roots back to the Dundas family of West Lothian. Believed to descend from Gospatrick, Prince of Northumberland, the family received their lands via a charter from Waldeve, Gospatric's son, likely during Malcolm IV's reign. The clan made significant contributions during the Wars of Scottish Independence, fighting alongside notable figures such as William Wallace and King Robert I. Noteworthy members include Sir George Dundas, who died at the Battle of Dupplin Moor in 1332, and William Dundas of Kincavel, imprisoned for his role in the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion. The family motto 'Essayez' (Try) reflects their resilience. Documented in the Sobieski brothers' Vestiarium Scoticum of 1842, the current Clan Chief, David Dundas, honors their legacy from Dundas Castle.
Color Scheme & Pattern
The Dundas Tartan presents a striking design featuring a combination of blue, black, green, and red. The pattern consists of criss-crossing lines and blocks of color, with thin lines of black and blue accentuating the green and red sections. This bold and distinctive look embodies the strength and resilience of the Dundas family. The colors are rich in symbolism: blue represents loyalty, black symbolizes strength, green signifies hope, and red stands for bravery. Crafted from 100% acrylic wool, this tartan ensures durability and comfort, making it a lasting tribute to Scottish heritage.
