Historical Context

Somerled from the Isles was the creator of Clan Donald, exiling fellow Norsemen from his home in the Western Isles in the 12th century. In 1164, he was executed while fighting King Malcolm IV. John, the brother of Angus Og, supported Robert the Bruce and took the title of "Lord of Isles" in 1354. The 2nd Lord claimed the Earldom of Ross and defended his claims at Harlow in 1411. His son was made Earl of Ross, a title officially recognized in 1430. The Lord of the Isles who died in 1478 was made Peer that same year, although he was in conflict with the King. In 1494, the title of Lord of the Isles was attached to the crown.
