The Campbell Weathered Tartan is steeped in the rich heritage of Clan Campbell, a formidable clan that ruled over the West of Scotland and Argyllshire. This clan traces its origins back to the 13th century when Diarmid was granted the Lordship of Lochow. The lineage continued with Colin Campbell of Lochow, knighted around 1280, who became the ancestor of the Campbells of Argyll. The clan's prominence was further established as chiefs became Earls of Argyll, with the 10th Earl receiving a Dukedom from William of Orange in 1701. Notably, the 9th Earl faced execution in 1685 for his role in the Monmouth Rebellion. The Campbells played a significant role in Scottish politics, holding esteemed titles such as Lord Justice General and Admiral of the Western Coasts and Isles, making their tartan a symbol of power and legacy.
