Leitrim County Tartan
Historical Significance
The Leitrim County Tartan is a vibrant tribute to the rich history and scenic landscapes of County Leitrim, located in the north of Ireland within the province of Connacht. This region, known for its breathtaking coastlines and the dramatic Sliabh an Iarinn mountain range, was once part of the ancient Kingdom of Breifne, ruled by the powerful O'Rourke and O'Reilly clans. The kingdom split in the 13th century, forming East Breifne (now County Cavan) and West Breifne (now County Leitrim). Notably, in 1270, the Vikings faced defeat at the Battle of Ath an Chip in this storied land. County Leitrim's history is marked by extensive deforestation between the 15th and 18th centuries to fuel the iron industry, transforming its once densely wooded landscapes. The Leitrim tartan, a beautiful design created by Polly Wittering of the House of Edgar, features prominently in this narrative, embodying the spirit of the region.
