Historical Context
The MacQuarrie clan, one of the oldest Highland clans, is part of the seven clans of Siol Alpin, tracing their lineage back to the ancient kingdom of D'l Riata. The clan's Gaelic name, MacGuaidhre, translates to "proud" or "noble." They share a common ancestry with the Mackinnons, as Guaire, the MacQuarrie ancestor, was the brother of Fingon, the Mackinnon progenitor. The MacQuarries played a crucial role in Scottish history, fighting alongside Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, steadfast in their support for Scottish independence. Following the suppression of the Lordship of the Isles, the MacQuarries gained more autonomy but generally aligned with the powerful Macleans of Duart. Their motto, "Turris Fortis Meus Mihi Deus" (God is a strong tower to me), and their badge, a pine, symbolize their strength and resilience. The MacQuarries once owned the island of Ulva and claim descent from Kenneth MacAlpine, Scotland's first king, alongside the MacGregors, MacKinnons, and MacPhies.
Tartan Details
The MacQuarrie Ancient Tartan is dominated by a bold red base, symbolizing strength and passion, interwoven with muted brown squares that add warmth and depth. Green stripes provide a striking contrast, representing the lush landscapes of Scotland. The overall pattern is a classic grid layout, which balances the colors harmoniously. Woven from 100% acrylic wool, this fabric is both durable and comfortable, making it ideal for traditional Scottish garments like kilts, scarves, and accessories.
