Historical Context

The Stewart of Galloway Tartan is a captivating piece from the House of Edgars' 'Old and Rare' range, made from 100% pure new wool kilting cloth. This tartan has deep historical roots, linked to the illustrious Clan Stewart, whose motto �Virescit vulnere virtus� translates to �Courage grows strong at a wound.� Unlike other clans with a single chief, each branch of the Stewart clan had its own chief, contributing to the clan's diverse heritage. The Stewarts produced nine of Scotland's monarchs, including notable figures like Bonnie Prince Charlie, who led the Jacobite rebellion of 1745-1746. The rebellion, however, met its end at Culloden Moor, forcing Prince Charlie to flee to France after months of evasion. The origins of the Stewarts can be traced back to the Counts of Dol and Dinan in France, with Walter Fitzalan being granted land by King David I and becoming the hereditary High Steward of Scotland. The Stewarts were Scotland's royal family from 1371 until the death of Queen Anne in 1714.
