Clan Buchanan is well-known in Scottish history because they are one of the clans that took their names from the place on which they resided. Their name Buchanan is believed to come from McAuslan which means Son of Ansel. For nearly 700 years, the areas of Buchanan located on the eastern side of Loch Lomond were possessed by the Buchanan family. In Gaelic Buchanan, the name is referred to in Gaelic as Mac a' Chanon Aich meaning "Son of the Canon". The family historian has claimed that the land of Buchanan was granted to the chief in exchange for recognition of his service against the Danes from Malcolm II, the King. Malcolm II.
