Clan Campbell Clan Campbell was powerful in the West of Scotland and in Argyllshire. They were known by the name of Diarmid and gained the Lordship of Lochow in the 13th century. William of Orange conferred a Dukedom to the 10th Earl. He was executed in 1685 over his participation during the Monmouth Rebellion. The Campbells played a significant role in the state's affairs and held high posts such as the Lord Justice General's heir and Admiral of Western Coasts and Isles of Scotland.
