The Duries were the owners of their estate at Craigluscar close to Dunfermline, Fife and the properties known as Durie located in the town of Scoonie close to Leven, Fife. A house built in Craigluscar likely around 1520, has the initials from George Durie and his wife Margaret Bruce. The style for Durie Tartan is believed be an inspiration for the Argyle Southern Highlanders and Argyle regimental tartan. The yellow color is derived taken from the dress (military uniforms for evening wear) faces (lapels) while the red is a symbol of that of the Durie family's French roots.
