The Border clan gets their name after the Barony of Johnston in Annandale in the Annandale region, where they are believed to have settled in the thirteenth century. They were a major player in the Border conflict and held significant power. The Crown was their ally. Sir James Johnston of Johnston was named Lord Johnston of Lockwood in 1633. Ten years later, he was named Earl of Hartfell and his son was named the Earl of Annandale in 1661. Johnstone Modern Tartan can be worn to any occasion and event.
