The MacDougall Tartan has a rich and fascinating history that dates back centuries. The clan originated in Lorn in Argyllshire, Scotland, and their power and influence extended throughout the western coast of Scotland. The MacDougalls were known for their loyalty to the Scottish crown, but their relationship with the monarchy became complicated over time. During the Battle of Dalrigh in 1306, the MacDougalls fought against Robert the Bruce, but the MacDougall Chief's loyalty to the Scottish King saved Robert the Bruce's life. In the 16th century, the clan's power began to decline, and by the end of the century, their lands had been confiscated by the Campbell Clan. During the Jacobite rising of 1715, Clan MacDougall supported the Jacobite cause and fought at the Battle of Sheriffmuir. As a result, the chief was forced into exile, but he later returned to Scotland to live as a fugitive until being pardoned in 1727. The MacDougall tartan's earliest reference is in the collection of the Highland Society of London, where a sample exists, signed and sealed by the Clan Chief around 1815. The present-day thread count is close to a sample dating to about 1830. The House of Edgar wove the version certified by the Chief MacDougall of MacDougall, dated 1906.
